The Marquez brothers seize the opportunity to rewrite history as Jorge Martin crashes from the lead.
It was quite an eventful race on the high hills, especially after a rare but heroic Assen race the week before. The Sachsenring race produced a number of heated battles among the podium contenders. At the front, Martin comfortably led the race for most of the time, while Pecco Bagnaia found his way to second place and maintained his pace behind the leading Spaniard.
A few seconds behind them were Marc and Alex Marquez, Franco Morbidelli, and Enea Bastianini. Morbidelli, who briefly fought with teammate Martin for the lead, slowly fell back and was threatened by the Marquez's and Bastianini.
The Italian came into contact with Marc Marquez after he went a bit wide in the first corner and did not expect Marquez to attempt an overtaking maneuver at the same time. While the Spaniard lost his momentum, it didn't take long before he was able to pass Morbidelli.
Morbidelli struggled to rebuild his pace, as he was constantly threatened by Bastianini behind him. The two exchanged several surprise dives at each other, with Bastianini staying just a few tenths ahead of the Pramac man.
The comfortable lead of Martin slowly dwindled as Bagnaia maintained a gap of about 8 tenths in the later stages of the race. Martin ultimately succumbed to the pressure and lost his front in the first corner of the penultimate lap.. A costly mistake for the championship..
Hereby, Bagnaia was able to cruise to victory, with Marc and Alex Marquez finishing second and third respectively, becoming the first brothers to share a podium since Nobuatsu and Takuma Aoki in Imola 1997!
Bastianini in 4th and Morbidelli in 5th. Nevertheless, it is a great redemption weekend for Morbidelli, who showed a glimpse of his long-lost form.
It was a positive weekend for the Marquez brothers aboard the Gresini Ducati, as Marc suffered a broken finger during a heavy practice crash over the weekend.
The late turn in the race meant that Bagnaia inherited the championship lead with ten points from Martin, who had been in the lead since the start of the season!
The battle in the top three is heating up as Bagnaia returns to his top form, while Marc Marquez is slowly reducing his deficit to Martin to 44 points.
Time for a summer break? We are already ready for it!
